SPAN 301S Service Learning in the Community
Course Description:
Students enhance Spanish language communication skills via community service in local community agencies.
Course Reflective Narrative:
My upper division service learning was done at the Boys and Girls Club of Salinas. It was a good experience overall as I was able to encourage and inspire the members, mostly of Hispanic decent, just by merely being there as a friend and guide. My goal initially was to go in and get the time needed as a requirement for my degree, but as time went along and I got to know some of the members more personally, it became something much more than receiving hours. It turned into a long lasting experience that I will always have with me. Many of the children there really looked up to me and that alone made me feel like I was making a difference in someone's life.
SPAN 301 Comp/Oral Practice
Course Description:
Continues to build proficiency as defined by the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines. Content-based instruction develops communicative language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing through readings and discussions of authentic Hispanic cultural and literary texts. For students with two or more years of Spanish or an intermediate level of Spanish language proficiency.
Course Reflective Narrative:
The completion of this course demonstrates my ability to communicate effective in a broad array of topics. With the time invested in the study abroad program, I felt like there was a weight lifted off my shoulders in terms of being able to communicate, listen, read and write in Spanish. The activities done in class and for homework made sure we were performing at the necessary level that the MLO suggests, and allows for non-native speakers to hear and communicate with people who have different accents, may be from different countries, and those who have different opinions.
SPAN 304 Intro to Hispanic Literature
Course Description:
Conducted in Spanish, the course introduces the principles of literary analysis, based on reading and discussion of Hispanic literary texts. Includes fiction, drama, essay, and poetry from Spain and Spanish America.
Course Reflective Narrative:
In this course, I learned about a numerous amount of authors, poets and other writes within Latin America, and what their writing did for Latin America as a whole. Some inspired others to follow their footsteps. Others were merely there as a guide, transforming ideas and playing with the reality of our world with the next. It was a very interesting class to see how so many people had major influences in their time, and how still today you can take notice to these changes and influences.
SPAN 395 Pre-Capstone
Course Description:
Studies a particular topic relative to the Spanish language or Hispanic cultures. May be repeated for credit when topics vary.
Course Reflective Narrative:
This was a crucial course for me a graduating senior here at CSUMB. It gave me the necessary time to focus in on what my project would be about, as well as the time to be able to develop a concrete plan and outline for continuing this project. Our major focus was to figure out the topic that we will be giving this coming May and develop and logical, concise synopsis of the research we find.
LING 392 Nat Lang/ Lang. Acquisition
Course Description:
Nature of Language & Language Acquisition introduces the scientific study of language, which includes theoretical concepts (e.g. structural linguistics, sociolinguistics, language development in first and second language acquisition) and application of linguistics in reading and writing development. Students develop a knowledge base in linguistics, phonemic awareness, and syntax, and apply it in real-world educational settings.
Course Reflective Narrative:Ling 392 was a course that I took relatively recent. This class was very similar to Span 313 in the sense that we looked at topics such as phonology, phonetics, semantics, syntax, pragmatics etc. The main difference was that instead of being in spanish and focusing on the spanish language, we focused on the english language. One really cool project that we did at the end of the class was to be able to interview a non-native speaker of english to sort out some of the phonological examples within the interview.
