Courses: Span 313, Ling 392
Reflection: The courses I took to fulfill this requirement were Spanish 313 "Intro to Linguistics" and Ling 392 "An Introduction to Language". Spanish 313 was the class that first captured my attention in linguistics. In this class we looked at the phonetics, phonology, semantics and syntax of language, especially focusing on phonology - the sound system of a language. Here I was able to capture a better understanding of how the spanish language worked inside the mouth, viewing the different muscles and tongue movements that are necessary to speak like a native. Another interesting aspect to this class was that it allowed us to see and listen to the distinct accents that there are in Latin America and in Spain. I think more than anything this was what made me appreciate the class, being that our very own class was made up of speakers from distinct areas of Latin America, the Caribbean and the United States.
Ling 392 was a course that I took relatively recent. This class was very similar to Span 313 in the sense that we looked at topics such as phonology, phonetics, semantics, syntax, pragmatics etc. The main difference was that instead of being in spanish and focusing on the spanish language, we focused on the english language. One really cool project that we did at the end of the class was to be able to interview a non-native speaker of english to sort out some of the phonological examples within the interview.
