Spring 2014
HCOM 312 Cooperative Argumentation
Course Description:
Introduces cooperative argumentation. Develops empathic and critical listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills for cooperative deliberation and problem solving practices; applies and assesses reasoning and argumentative skills in oral and written communication contexts on various topics. Offers built-in assessment in HCOM MLO 1 or the concentrations in Peace Studies, Pre-Law, Practical and Professional Ethics or Writing and Rhetoric.
Course Reflective Narrative:
This course was immensely beneficial in my ability to read, write and comprehend difficult material. I was blessed with the opportunity to be placed in this class with such a wonderful instructor. Mrs. Lisa Watson really did an outstanding job in teaching us the material that needed to be learned, while at the same time making an effort to make the class seem as exciting as possible. I can speak for the entire class when I say that we all took a very deep long-lasting message from the many stories she told us, which in turn, was her very creative way to teach us about life and course material. I also think that it was crucial to take this class at the same time as Capstone, in order for my improved writing to work hand in hand with my final Capstone paper. Overall the class challenged me and many other students but proved that hard work pays off when you give it 100 percent.
WLC 400 Major Capstone
Course Description:
Students work with the instructor and WLC faculty advisors to research, synthesize, write and present their Capstone projects. Students will also assemble a Graduation Portfolio reflecting how each MLO was met. This course is required for all Japanese, Spanish and World Languages and Cultures majors.
Course Reflective Narrative:
Major Capstone is the class that sums up my whole college experience. It gave me insight on what I wanted to research and how I went about conducting that research. First we chose a topic, in my case "Second Language Acquisition" based on the research of USC professor Stephen Krashen. Second, we took the necessary two to three months to actually do the research on our topic. Some of us had lots of changes from when we first proposed our topics, but for the most part the research part went smoothly. Next came the actual writing process. This took quite sometime as I was still considering how I wanted to approach my topic and what information would be included and what would not. There was lots of information to relay, being that Dr. Krashen is highly recognized in the field of linguistics, but my research focused mainly on his 5 major hypothesis about second language acquisition.
In this course we also got to be creative and create this website as a method of promoting the hard work that has gone into these five years of college. This, in my opinion was a great idea and a great way to show people what the college experience can be like. Finally, there is the Capstone Festival which celebrates the hard work and achievements many of the students have put work into. From there on we will each individually be giving our presentation on what we found and our opinions on it.
