Spring 2012
Span 313 Intro to Spanish Linguistics
Course Description:
Intro to Spanish Linguistics: Presents the principal branches of linguistic study, as it pertains to Spanish: the sound system (phonetics and phonology), the structure of words (morphology), and the structure of sentences (syntax). Additionally, attention is paid to bilingualism, especially Spanish in the US, and how Spanish is spoken/written differently by various social groups (sociolinguistics) and in various Spanish-speaking countries (dialectology).
Course reflective narrative:
In this course I first learned about the processes that take place inside the minds of us human beings, and how that translates to spoken language. Most of the course work focused on the articulation points in our mouths and how each consonant and vowel are articulated in the vocal tract. I like the fact that in this class we were able to study and distinguish the different dialects within Latin America, as it pertains the linguistic difference that there is in the world. We also focused on the linguistic study of semantics and syntax, which give a firm introduction to how we understand the different messages we receive daily and how these sentences, phrases, etc are formed according to the grammatical rules of Spanish. Our final project revolved around interviewing a native Spanish speaker, dissecting certain segments along the way.
Span 305 Spanish for The Professions
Course Description:
Designed for students interested in developing a functional use of Spanish for the professions (business, education, law, medicine, social work, etc.), from a Hispanic cultural perspective. Students will have an opportunity to practice and develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The Spanish-speaking world will provide the cultural context, and the area of business the content area. (Offered every fourth semester.)
Course reflective narrative:
This course was directly related to applying the student with the tools necessary to be an appropriate business professional. Our coursework consisted mainly in reviewing the textbook, analyzing the different types and styles of documents such as: cartas de presentación, cartas de disculpas, cartas de agradecimiento, cartas de solicitud de empleo, currículum vitae, etc. This class defintely improved my ability to use Spanish in a functional communicative way, allowing for me to enter another realm of linguistic vernacular in a second language.
